How a walk-in shower installation job runs, step by step
If you’ve had a bathroom project go sideways before, or heard about one from a neighbor, this page is for you. Here’s exactly what happens at each stage, how long it actually takes, and what we do when something needs to change along the way.
Step 1. The call and the site visit
You call or request an estimate, and we schedule an in-home visit, usually within a few days. We check your existing plumbing, the wall and floor structure, and go over layout and finish options with you in your bathroom. This takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Step 2. The written quote
Within a few days of the site visit, you get a written quote with shower dimensions, materials, the plumbing scope, permit filing, a timeline, and a payment schedule. Nothing is quoted verbally, and nothing starts until you've approved it in writing.
Step 3. Selections and ordering
Once you approve the quote, we finalize tile, surround, glass, and fixture selections and place the order. This typically takes one to two weeks and runs in parallel with permit filing, so it doesn't add extra waiting on top of the permit process.
Step 4. Permits
This job involves plumbing, so a permit is required in Winchester as in every Massachusetts town. We file it before work starts, alongside a building permit if the job includes framing or floor changes for a curbless entry. This runs alongside the material lead time in Step 3 rather than adding time on its own.
Step 5. Demolition and protection
Materials arrive, and we schedule your install date. On day one, we protect your floors and the path from your front door to the bathroom, then remove the old tub or shower and open the wall to the studs in the shower area. Plan on half a day to a full day, depending on what we find once the old unit is out.
Step 6. The build
Plumbing is set, any framing or floor work for a curbless entry is done, and the town's plumbing inspector reviews the rough-in before we close the wall. Waterproofing membrane goes on next and needs to cure before tile is set, then tile, glass, and fixtures go in. This is the bulk of the job and typically runs three to six working days, depending on whether you've chosen a prefabricated surround or a fully tiled shower.
Step 7. Inspection and punch list
Once tile, grout, and fixtures are in, we go through the shower ourselves before we ever ask you to look: checking the door, drain flow, grout lines, and fixture operation. Anything that needs adjusting gets fixed before we call it finished. This takes a few hours, usually the same day the build wraps up.
Step 8. Final walkthrough and warranty
We walk the finished shower with you, run the water together, and address anything you flag before we call the job complete. The work is covered under our workmanship warranty ({WARRANTY_TERMS}). This step takes 20 to 30 minutes.
How We Handle Change Orders
If something needs to change once we’re into the job, whether it’s a floor that needs more reinforcement than expected or a selection you want to revise, we price it in writing and get your approval before that work continues. You will never be asked to make a decision standing in a bathroom with the wall open and no context for what it costs. If you say no to a change, we proceed with the original scope wherever that’s still possible.
How We Keep Your House Liveable
We work between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and clean up before we leave every day, so your house isn’t sitting in dust or debris overnight. Demolition and tile work do produce real dust, so we seal off the bathroom with plastic sheeting and run a HEPA vacuum during cutting, and we lay down floor protection along the whole path from your entry to the bathroom, not just inside it. Water to the rest of the house stays on throughout the job; the only interruptions are short windows tied to a specific plumbing step, and we tell you about those in advance.
In Winchester specifically, a lot of the older homes near the center and along the commuter rail line sit close together on narrow streets with tight driveways.
